Experiencia teatral

En una experiencia totalmente inmersiva, Sweeney Todd se presenta en Timbre4, teniendo como protagonista a la compañía Talk is Free Theatre de Canadá, en idioma inglés, la función dura 3.30hs, pero realmente no se sienten por la dinámica, la forma de contar y la calidad artística del producto.

La cita comienza una hora antes de la función, donde los espectadores se reunirán en un punto previamente estipulado, recibirán una pulserita de color a modo de entrada y comenzarán a vivenciar El viaje curioso, un espectáculo que dura aproximadamente 45 minutos (en español).

La propuesta de esta primera parte es hacer un recorrido por diferentes lugares, conocer a varios personajes y prestar atención a lo que ellos tienen para contar; lo que cada uno vaya diciendo es parte de un mensaje global que se relaciona con el musical que se verá después, obviamente cada uno podrá relacionarlo como mejor le parezca.

Esta primera parte, tiene como intérpretes a Hernán Lewkowicz (que también participa en Sweeney), Nela Fortunato y Jvier Kussrow, los tres hacen muy buenos trabajos, todo se vive muy de cerca, se vuelve tangible… se es parte de lo que vendrá después, el espectador también cuenta.

Luego comienza el espectáculo central, cuya historia se puede resumir de la siguiente forma: a mediados del 1800, el barbero Benjamín Barker es encarcelado injustamente en Londres, al salir de su prisión además de querer reencontrarse con su mujer y su hija Johanna, busca vengarse del Juez que lo encerró.

Para cumplir con su cometido toma el nombre de Sweeney Todd y crea una alianza con su amiga, la señora Lovett, la dueña de la peor pastelería del lugar. Mientras pone en marcha su plan, se entera (entre otras cosas) que el Juez quiere desposar a su hija, cosa que lo enfurece aún más y decide apoyar a Antonhy, el pretendiente de la joven.

Luego de un intento fallido para alcanzar su cometido, decide que todos deben pagar por lo que a él le ocurrió, es así como con su compañera de aventuras urden un nuevo plan, que los beneficiará a ambos.

El gran diferencial de este espectáculo es la puesta, el público se mantiene activo toda la función (que cuenta con un interludio luego de la escena 9), se tiene que trasladar por todo el espacio, cada rincón de Timbre4 es utilizado para algún cuadro, hasta se pasa por los baños.

Lo que respecta a la puesta escenográfica, con pocos elementos arman y desarman cada lugar, la casa, la pastelería, la calle, la barbería, etc. El diseño de luces acompaña, pintando de colores fuertes como el azul o el rojo, los puntos más álgidos de la historia.

Todo se vuelve muy cercano, el público incluso es invitado a participar activamente de ciertos pasajes, lo que termina de generar un rompimiento de los límites respecto a quién es quién. Los espacios tienen diferentes tamaños y cada uno está perfectamente diseñado para apreciar de cerca lo que va pasando, en los casos que hay sillas, su ubicación la ideal para la escena, de no haberlas, los espectadores son guiados para ubicarse de la mejor manera; todo pasa ahí nomás, al lado, solo se toma distancia en el tramo final de la historia.

El clima lúgubre y algo tenebroso que se genera, se apoya en la música del gran Stephen Sondheim y el libro de Hugh Wheeler y se complementa con una puesta que le hace honor al espíritu de la historia.

El vestuario termina de pintar el cuadro, dejando ver quién es cada personaje, cuál es su rango o su clase social, acompañando el porte de cada quién, dejando claro que todo ocurre en Londres con looks muy típicos del lugar.

El nivel de los intérpretes es muy alto, tanto a nivel actoral, vocal y coreográfico, no es fácil trabajar con el público tan cerca, al nivel de tener que pedir permiso para desarrollar su personaje, requiere mucho entrenamiento para no irse del juego.

Brillantes todos, pudiendo destacar sobre todo a nivel vocal a Tess Benger, quien se pone en la piel de Johanna, su voz resalta por encima de las de sus compañeros, pero no para taparlos sino para apoyar y resaltar, excelente trabajo. También la señora Lovett, Tracy Michailidis, una interpretación sublime, es quién lleva el mayor hilo de la obra, maravillo trabajo. Y para finalizar Joel Cumber, cuyo personaje principal es Pirelli (un barbero con quién se enfrenta el protagonista), tanto en este rol central, como en los otros más pequeños que le toca cubrir, es magnífico en todo lo que hace, realmente destacable, el decir, el hacer, todo el él brilla.

La realidad es que todos los trabajos son muy buenos, tanto por parte de los protagonistas, como del coro, dentro del cual resalta claramente Tahitih Vejdani, quién circula desde el inicio hasta el final con un personaje que genera intriga y llama a seguirlo. Realmente un elenco de lujo.

Para quienes no entiendan el idioma, igual pueden disfrutar del espectáculo porque Hernán Lewkowicz, antes de cada acto va leyendo en español, el resumen de lo que se verá a continuación. Si quieren prepararse un poco más, también pueden ver la película dirigida por Tim Burton y protagonizada por Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter,  Jamie Campbell Bower, Jayne Wisener, Sacha Barón Cohen y Alan Rickman entre otros (¿ya los tentó el elenco?).

La música en vivo, está a cargo de Mariana Atamas (violín), Alejando Becerra (violonchelo) y Stephan Ermel (piano), ellos además de ejecutar preciosamente toda la partitura y añadir fuerza a este musical tan potente, también se van trasladando junto al elenco y el público por los diferentes espacios, aplauso adicional por ese esfuerzo.

Todo en esta experiencia funciona bien, desde la organización, la propuesta de sumar ambas partes, la puesta maravillosa, el nivel tanto actoral como de la producción y dirección (a cargo de Mitchell Cushman), las sensaciones generadas en el público que no para de repetir lo bien que la está pasando y lo bueno que es el planteo, mientras se mueve de un lado a otros, todo hace que valga la pena tomarse cerca de 5 horas para disfrutar de un teatro del altísimo nivel.

Thetrical experience

In a totally immersive experience, Sweeney Todd is presented in Timbre4, starring the company Talk is Free Theatre of Canada, in English. The performance lasts 3.30hs, but you don´t really feel it because the dynamic story telling and the artistic quality of the product.

The appointment begins an hour before the performance, when spectators will meet at a previously stipulated point. They receive a colored bracelet as a ticket and begin to experience The curious journey; a show that lasts approximately 45 minutes (in Spanish).

The proposal of this first part is to go through different places, meet several characters and pay attention to what they have to tell; what each one says is part of a global message that relates to the musical that will be seen later. Obviously everyone can relate it according to their preferences.

This first part is performed by Hernán Lewkowicz (who also participates in Sweeney), Nela Fortunato and Jvier Kussrow. The three of them do very good jobs and everything occurs really close to the viewers; the public matters and become part of what will come next.

Then the central show begins, whose story can be summarized as follows: in the mid-1800s, the barber Benjamin Barker is unfairly imprisoned in London. When  leaving his prison, in addition to longing to meet his wife and daughter Johanna, he seeks revenge on the judge who locked him up.

To fulfill her mission, he takes the name of Sweeney Todd and creates an alliance with her friend, Mrs Lovett, the owner of the worst bakery in the place. While he is carrying out his plan, he learns (among other things) that the judge wants to marry his daughter. The news angers him even more and decides to support Antonhy, the young girl’s love.

After an unsuccessful attempt to accomplish his task, he decides that everyone must pay for what had happened to him, so together with his adventure partner they hatch a new plan, that will benefit both of them.

The great differential of this show is the setting: the public remains active the whole play (which has an interlude after scene 9), public must move throughout the space as every corner of Timbre4 is used for some scenes, even the bathrooms.

As far as the stage setting is concerned, with few elements they manage to assemble and disassemble each place, the house, the patisserie, the street, the barbershop, etc. The lighting design accompanies, painting with strong colors such as blue or red, the highest points in history.

Everything becomes very close; the public is even invited to actively participate in certain passages, which ends up generating a break in the boundaries regarding who is who.

The stage spaces are of different sizes and each one is perfectly designed to closely appreciate what is going on; if there are chairs, their location is ideal to watch the scene, if not, the spectators are guided to be located in the best way; everything happens just there, next to them, to only take distance at the final stretch of history.

The gloomy and somehow dark atmosphere  is based on the music of the great Stephen Sondheim and the book of Hugh Wheeler and is complemented by a setting that honors the spirit of the story.

The customes complete the picture, letting see who each character is, which is their rank or social class, accompanying the bearing of each, making clear that everything happens in London with looks very typical of the place.

The level of performers is very high,  at the actoral, vocal and choreographic level, it is not easy to work with the audience so close, at the level of having to ask permission to develop his character, it requires a lot of training to not leave the game.

Although the whole cast give brilliant performances,  the vocal level of Tess Benger , who takes the role of Johanna, stands out;  her voice sounds above those of her colleagues,  not to cover them but to support and highlight, excellent work.

Also Tracy Michailidis as Mrs Lovett gives a sublime interpretation, she carries the greatest thread of the plot in a  wonderful work.

And to finish Joel Cumber, whose main character is Pirelli (a barber with whom the protagonist faces), both in this central role, as in the other smaller ones that he covers, is magnificent, really remarkable, saying, doing, all he always shines.

The fact is that all the performances are very good, both by the protagonists and the choir, where clearly Tahitih Vejdani highlights, who circulates from the beginning to the end with a character that generates intrigue and calls to follow him. Really a luxury cast.

For those who do not understand the language, they can still enjoy the show because Hernán Lewkowicz, before each act reads in Spanish, the summary of what will be seen immediately. However, if you want to prepare a little more, you can also watch the film directed by Tim Burton and starring by Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter,  Jamie Campbell Bower, Jayne Wisener, Sacha Barón Cohen y Alan Rickman (¿did already the cast tempt you?).

The live music, is in charge of Mariana Atamas (violin), Alejando Becerra (cello) and Stephan Ermel (piano), they in addition to play beautifully the piece and add strength to this powerful musical, They also move with the cast and the audience through the different spaces; they deserve and additional applause for that effort.

Everything in this experience works well, including the organization, the proposal to add both parties, the wonderful setting, the cast, production and direction (by Mitchell Cushman) level and the sensations generated in the audience that repeats how well it is going and how outstanding the proposal is, while moving from one side to another, everything makes it worth taking about 5 hours to enjoy a theater of the highest level.
